Biography

Alex Blair is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist based in New Haven, CT. His musical foundation began as a member of the Trinity Choir of Men and Boys, where he spent nine years singing and developing his skills in piano and composition. During this time, he wrote several works for voice and choir, including several performed in concert. In 2017, he was awarded the Composition Award from the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, where he studied with Michael Laurello and Polina Nazaykinskaya.

Beyond choral work, Alex’s compositional focus has been shaped by his work with Wally, a multi-genre project he co-founded in 2014. Wally has released five records and nearly a dozen singles, blending influences from rock, pop, choral, jazz, samba, and folk. Formed with Teo and Lucas Hernandez, the group’s collaborative songwriting approach reflects a long-standing musical friendship and exploration of eclectic styles. Wally’s music has been performed across the East Coast and continues to be a central part of Alex’s creative output. Alex’s piece “Offering,” was recorded by Wally and featured in Mateusz Nowikow’s 2022 short film, Noir.

In addition to his work with Wally, Alex writes, records, and publishes solo music, often featuring intimate arrangements of guitar, synthesizer, soundscapes, organ, and vocals. His solo work provides a space for personal exploration and storytelling around human themes of isolation, aging, loss and hope.

Alex is also an experienced recording engineer and producer, working across genres that include folk, rock, choral, contemporary classical and experimental music. He co-manages “The Shop” a community venue and recording studio in New Haven, CT which features a wide array of music from rock, R&B and folk to classical and free jazz.

Alex earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, Politics, and Economics from University College London in 2020, where he focused on themes of cultural and political development, particularly in Eastern Europe and Poland. While in London, Alex was a tenor at St. Luke’s Church in Chelsea and in the University of London Chamber Choir. These experiences continue to inform his perspective as an artist, offering a nuanced understanding of the relationship between music and history.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Alex is a committed advocate for climate action and public policy reform in his role as Director of Policy at Corcoran Street Group in Washington, D.C. He is a proud Polish-American and enjoys working on his 1996 Ford F-150.

Whether composing, performing, or producing, Alex approaches his work with curiosity and dedication, driven by a belief in music’s universal ability to heal.
